Boolsen's Stone Garden
Boolsen's Stone Garden was founded by the author Johannes Boolsen (1895-1985), who between 1939 and 1973 collected more than 1,000 stones in his own garden at Vodbindervej 14 in Bangsbostrand. The majority of the stones come from Vendsyssel, and many were acquired according to the ancient barter principle. Johannes Boolsen collected amber at the beach, polished it into jewelry and then exchanged it for distinctive stones.
In 1973, Johs. Boolsen's property and the stone garden were purchased by Frederikshavn Municipality and the stones were transferred to Bangsbo Museum. The extensive collection represents all types of utility stones, from ancient millstones to medieval baptismal fonts and up to modern millstones and mooring bollards.
The stone garden has been established in the area of Bangsbo Park that was previously called Danseengen. The plant is shaped like a fan that spreads out from an approximately 190-year-old oak tree. The ribs in the fan are divided into beds, where the main emphasis is on one specific type of stone. Different varieties of paradise apples have been planted as supports for the stone collection.
