Norwegian mountain wall

Botanical Plants Norwegian mountain wall

Since we in Bangsbo are part of the Nordic region, we see it as an important communication task to show part of the Nordic flora, and therefore it was decided to build a 40 meter long and 3 meter high mountain wall of Norwegian granite at the steepest place in the area.

In the fall of 2012, work began on finding boulders that had both the right color and physical shape to build a rock wall. A local landscaping company contacted a quarry near Larvik in Norway, which already exports stone for coastal protection in Denmark. The stones are black granite with a density of 3.35, so heavy machinery was required to build the wall, as the desired stones would weigh from 1 to 5 tons. 250 tons of stone were ordered and delivered, and work began in early January 2013.

After the rough sorting, excavation began on the hillside where the rock wall was to be established, as it was important that the rock wall did not block the view of the lower-lying structures from the upper area. We started by making a base along the entire length of the wall from the largest and most regular stones, trying to create a natural course and avoid straight lines.

The actual work of handling the stones was both exciting and challenging, but was made considerably easier by the fact that a special grapple could be mounted on the excavator, which could turn and rotate the stones as we desired. To give the wall the appearance of being massive when viewed from the upper lying area, we placed an extra row of stones behind the top layer, and this undulating row of stones has made it possible to plant low shrubs right up to the rock wall. To make it all as authentic as possible, practically all the plants have been imported from Norway, with the exception of a few tree species.
