The Rose Garden

No other flower has inspired poets to write songs and poems for centuries like the rose. No other flower has been named after so many queens, princesses, famous and prominent people, as well as large and small towns, castles, manors and relatives of rose breeders, indeed everything that people admire and hold dear.

Many flowers have been compared to the rose throughout time, e.g. the hollyhock, the rock rose, the alpine rose, the Christmas rose, rose geraniums and many more. The symphony of colors of roses, the shape and fragrance of the flowers, the diversity of the plants in foliage and growth habits make this plant genus incredibly exciting and will continue to impress, fascinate and inspire future poets and flower lovers in the future, with the help of rose breeders. It is not until the time of Christian IV that there is reliable information about rose cultivation in Denmark.

A large manor naturally includes a Rose Garden, which can beautifully highlight the floral splendor of roses. On Frederikshavn's 175th anniversary as a market town on September 25, 1993, the Rose Garden in Bangsbo Botanical Garden was inaugurated by Associate Professor Jette Dahl Møller, Botanical Institute in Copenhagen. At the same time, the Garden's own rose, the Bangsbo rose, was named and planted. The rose is named after the area around the beautiful, old Bangsbo manor. It was bred by the Danish rose breeding company Poulsen Roser, and has a fine pink color and delicate fragrance. In the pots at the Gardener's House, it blooms until frost sets in.

The center of the Rose Garden is surrounded by the “family tree of roses” – a wide range of rose cultivars from the past. Here you will find many of the now forgotten “old daws” roses, which have such an enchanting scent that you will involuntarily come to the romantic corner. In total, there are about 150 different rose varieties represented. In addition to the roses, clematis is planted in the climbing rose stands. Clematis and roses complement each other wonderfully, and together with the 8,000 daffodil bulbs, they provide a very long flowering season in this part of the Garden.
